Chapter 2: New World’s Await
Some years have passed in the city of Vinyamar. A young Sidhmediriel continues her study of metalwork, concentrating heavily on the creation of runic symbols placed upon raw ore.
She misses her father greatly, as he has spent much time away in some far away land, doing what, she can only guess. When he does make the journey home to attend the annual festival he only tells her that he thinks she will enjoy what awaits her, and nothing more. This is only serves to drive her anxiousness to see what it is he has labored long years over; what has kept him so far from home.
When not in study, and when her father is far from home, Sidhmeldiriel spends much of her time along the western shores of Nevrast with many of her friends. They share the stories from their parents of the Noldor city of Aman and the Valar of Valinor. Of the Valar, Sidmeldiriel is most fond of Varda, Aule, and Mandos.
She prays nightly in her room before heading off to sleep. To Varda she thanks daily for the stars, numerous in their numbers, just as her parents did before her. To Aule she prays deeply for his guidance in her crafting, to guide her hammer and chisel into creating what she sees in her mind. To Mandos she nears the point of begging his forgiveness for the transgressions her kin had brought upon the Teleri.
Of the last days that the Noldor under Turgon’s banner remained within Vinyamar, none would of guessed what it was that had taken many fathers and mothers away from their children. What secret would not be revealed until due time was given. Long had the days been for Sidhmeldiriel to find out what her father was away doing. The day had finally come to pass that the stones of Vinyamar and long heard uttered.
Aracala had again returned home, but this time his smile was much greater than Sidhmeldiriel had ever remembered. Sardince and her looked on eagerly with delight, waiting for his tongue to speak the words they have so longed to hear.
“Today I bring to you my family word of what I have been doing; where my laboring hands have spent these longs years, preparing you both for this day. Today we shall rejoice and sing and dance, for I, as have many others, have been away building for us a new city. This city is the most beautiful place in all these lands. It can rival the beauty of all Valinor in both its strength and its majesty.” Aracala said, as his wife and daughter looked on with eager anticipation.
Aracala spoke softly and bluntly, “It is the will of Hir [Lord] Turgon that the location of this new city is kept secret and never spoken outside its walls. I however, have been granted this one time to speak of it so that you know we shall depart for it on the light of the next full moon. Do not speak of our departure with no one, and pack away only that which will fit upon our cart. I can also tell you that all of your needs will be attended to upon our arrival to this new city. Now let us partake of food and wine, and rejoice in this news that I have given you, my family.”
Sardince and her daughter prepared a large meal, and the family sat together at their small table listening to stories Aracala had of the lands he had journeyed too, asking questions not pertaining to the new, unnamed city, but rather asking if they too will follow the same paths from Vinyamar to their new home. After the meal was finished, Sardince grabbed her harp and began playing and singing, as her husband looked lovingly upon her face. Sidhmeldiriel got up and walked over to the window and looked out and up at the stars, a slight smile glistening on her soft lips.
Her father walked over behind her, placing his hands lightly on her shoulders and asked her, “My daughter, is something on your mind this eve?”
“Not really father,” she uttered. “It is just this is such great surprise for me. Tell me can you describe this new city for me?” she asked, slightly begging.
“I cannot daughter, not because I was forbidden, but rather my words cannot begin to describe it in a fashion that will do its beauty true justice. Just know this. This new land will pour out only love and awe to your very spirit. You will love it as you have never loved before. Now get some sleep, young one. We have much to do in three days time,” he said softly to her as he turned her towards him and gave her a fatherly embrace and a kiss upon her brow.
