Tales of the First Age
Chapter 1: Nevrast
Short has the time been that the ships sailed from Alqualonde, and those that followed Fingon across the gnashing ice arrived upon these lands. The days of the Sun, still in its freshness upon the landscape of Arda, for it has not been many years since the Noldor had returned to Beleriend.
Nestled upon the western shores of Beleriend was a small city, once inhabited by the Sindar and claimed by the Noldor king Turgon, the second son to Fingolfin, and brother to Fingon. This city Turgon would name Vinyamar, and it would serve as the center of his kingdom in the lands of Nevrast.
Among the Noldor that had crossed the ice, and who served as a loyal artisan to Turgon’s court was Aracala. Aracala was a highly skilled builder, learning under the tutelage of Aule while in Valinor. With Aracala was his wife Sardince, whom was a highly skilled weaver of tapestry and cloth. Rich was their love of crafting, and through this shared love they would welcome a daughter, Sidhmeldiriel, during the fourteenth year under the sun.
The conflict between the houses of the Noldor had now been settled and Sidhmeldiriel was so named in honor of this. Her name means friend of peace among her people and by this time the Noldor were thriving across Beleriend.
Sidhmeldiriel spent her beginning years in study, learning the languages of Beleriend and the stories of the Valar of Valinor. She was inspired during this time to take up metalwork from symbols she had seen donning many of the Noldorin shields she had seen.
Her father was often never there, for he was away in some far away land, tasked by Lord Turgon, for what, she did not know. When not in study, Sidhmeldiriel would be seen exploring the valley of Nevrast with other young Elves; singing and dancing ancient melodies as they moved along.
Many times Sardince would take Sidhmeldiriel to the shore of the western sea. They would sit there for hours looking to the West as Sardince would speak of her yearnings to once again walk the streets of Aman.
“Mother, do you regret coming to these lands and leaving your home behind?” Sidhmeldiriel said.
“Miss my home? To that I must say yes. Regret coming to these shores? To that I must deny, for if I were to regret such a thing, then it shall mean that I regret you my daughter, and that is not so.” Sardince replied.
“Perhaps then mother, one day we shall return to Aman, so that you may be home and I at your side.” Sidhmeldiriel said.
“Do not hope of such a thing my daughter, for we are cursed forevermore by Mandos for the blood we spilled in Alqualonde. My doom will befall me upon these shores I fear. If there be one regret I have, it is that this curse too, falls upon you.” Sardince replied, a solemn tear rolling down her cheek, glistening under the starlit sky.
