My VIP status on my account has just stopped unexpectedly. Do I have to renew it every year? Or is it supposed to be continuous? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

What kind of subscription plan do you have? Lifetime? Yearly? Only lifetime VIP accounts don't have to renew every x months, all others have to make sure to renew when their subscription ends, or use some kind of pre-approval plan.
Also make sure your billing information matches your information on your credit card, otherwise Turbine can't draw money from your card and your account will drop to premium.
If neither of those things help solve your problem, you should contact account support (calling them is the fastest way, but may be difficult if you're not from the USA, tickets on the other hand take about 2 weeks to get answered and require you to reply to the automated email you get after submitting the ticket).

Ah, I have got a new card for the account the payment comes from. That could be a reason. I was paying for my VIP quarterly.
