"I swear I did not mean to offend anyone, Officer." That was how I started my plea at the court in Bree - the Men seem to take umbrage at, well, anything. Maybe it's just because they've had so much trouble with brigands?
I, Nimmin Willowsend, was just out practicing my trapping, and got arrested for it. TWO guards: was that really necessary? One of them was an angry hobbit (Mordor has no fury like an angry hobbit, my poor knees), and the other was Officer Banks. Apparently there has recently been a group of people out of the land just east of the town, which is full of half-orcs, trapping defenseless hobbits and travelers in general - oh Andrath is the name of the place, I believe, though I am not from this region so I don't really know the words of Men or Shirelings too well.
I mean, it is standard procedure in Rivendell to do this, so I kept on trying to tell the people at the jail, but none would listen to me. Hardly a day goes by without seeing some young hunter working at laying traps: you need to angle them right, set them right, aim them right in some cases - a lot goes into this careful style of hunting! "Nonsense," was my only reply - well that and disbelieving laughter in some cases. "Yer an orc-lover or some random orc in disguise," was the second.
Such an insult! It is true that I cook, of course I do; good hunters need to be able to live off the land. But that DOES NOT INCLUDE HOBBITS!
I finally was let out of jail after a night quaking in my boots, listening to some ruffians talk about how they committed this or that burglary, murder or worse, while they played dice with the teeth of someone who'd recently died in that horrid place. I do not fear death, no elf does, but I feared those Men!
So beware, I say to the other Elves who might be reading this, and if you are hunters, do NOT practice your trapping anywhere near the towns of Men or little folk!
