I just - don't - understand it. I know that those strange Hobbits in Bree can somehow live with the Big People, but as far as I, Sprice Brashwood, Warden Extraordinaire, am concerned, they are nothing but trouble. Who attacked the Shire? Men. Who rides those big horse-things? Men. So who has to be those freaky big black-cloaked things? HM?
Big People, of course. In other words: Men.
Now... I know there are some Big People who SEEM to be good. Those uh, Ranger-folk, they seem all right. But they have not done a thing about the Brigands all over the easternmost section of the Shire, and believe me there are tons of those.
It isn't really my department, even, and that's the most frustrating. I mean, as a Warden I am part of the Bounders, naturally, but I am member of the Department of Leaf and Twig (that'd be Animal Control, as far as non-Bounders are concerned). We make sure that there's the proper number of any animal in the Shire and thereabouts. I got sent out into the rest of Middle Earth on a bit of an exchange, so that I could help out SOCA (Society for Counting Animals) with their efforts to make sure that like the Shire, every area has the proper amount of wolves, bears, and so on. It's generally 500 per critter, if you want to know.
...But I keep getting interrupted in my efforts by Big People! There are so many Tomb Robbers in Evendim, and those Angmar-people who breathe on you?? VERY unnatural. And then, even worse, GOBLINS. Of course every Hobbit has heard stories about ancient days in the Shire with Bullroarer Took and the goblin wars, but I didn't realize they are everywhere else! I'm not sure those things AREN'T some kind of Big Person, either.
It's a terrible influence on us Shirelings, too. I know many Hobbits have taken to riding on small versions of these Horse-things, for instance. And I have seen at least one become addicted to STEALING FROM PEOPLE! "Oh, it's just goblins..." he says, but that is such a slippery slope...
I do not know what to do here. I am just left shaking my poor head, sadly.
