Wow, what a review! Extremely well written! I'm very impressed, and I can't wait to see the movie.

A fine review, Herebrand. =) It conveys your enjoyment of the movie, and your fondness for and knowledge of Tolkien's legendarium shine through.

I am definitely not what you would call a lore fanatic or expert, so I didn't bring any sort of prejudice to the watching of the movie. I watched it for what it was - a retelling. I was sure there were things in it that most likely weren't in the Hobbit (I was later told they were in the Silmarillion, so not just pulled out of thin air and stuffed into the movie), but I really enjoyed the movie. It was fun to see scenes that were familiar to me from the *ahem* 1970's cartoon version in there, albeit with some action or dialogue redone. All in all a very enjoyable experience that I don't want to have to wait months for it to continue in part two!
I enjoyed reading your review. I agree that it was very thoughtful and well written. And it was refreshing to read something that didn't come at the movie with a chip on its proverbial shoulder the size of Mount Doom. Thank you for sharing it.

I personally really enjoyed the scene in Rivendell. Especially the exchanges between Gandalf and Galadriel - the "Oh, you!" expression on her face when she realized the trick he'd pulled was perfect, and went a long way towards establishing what was hinted at in LOTR - that G and G were friends, on a personal level, not just allies.
Maybe I'm a dork, but I loved that little glimpse into the lives of such iconic characters!

Just watched it last night. What's bad is, I was seeing them going through the Lone-Lands and Eregion, and going "been there", "seen it", "don't go that way, there's more trolls there" and stuff like that.
