I'm trying to fight the urge to put my Tolkien scholar's hat on and explain the differences!

Very well!
In the film, the man called "Ranger" is based on Beren, son of Barahir, one of the great heroes of the race of Men in the First Age. The elf-maiden who he falls in love with is Luthien, an Elvish princess who is described in the Silmarillion as "the most beautiful of all the children of the world." Her father, whom the Elf Daeron betrays them to, is King Thingol of Doraith (a forest, as in the film), one of the most powerful and noble Elf-lords of the First Age. When he learns of Beren's love for Luthien, he sets as her bride-price a Silmaril (the film's "life stone"), one of three Elvish jewels in which is contained the light from Valinor, where the Elves and the Valar (powers that made and govern the world) dwelt in safety (or so they thought) from Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. The light came from the Two Trees, Laurelin and Telpirion, and after Morgoth invaded Valinor and destroyed the trees, the light lived on only in the three jewels, which Morgoth stole and set in his Iron Crown. Beren vowed to bring one back to prove his love for Luthien to Thingol, and journeyed alone to Angband, Morgoth's fortress. Luthien followed him in secret, and together they entered the fortress and claimed a Silmaril.
When Morgoth realised what had happened (Luthien had sung a song to cause him to sleep) he sent Carcharoth, the greatest and most terrible wolf in history, to capture them (in the film, it's a dragon). Beren and the wolf fought, and the wolf bit off his hand (as in the film), which held the Silmaril.
In the Silmarillion, Beren returns to Thingol who, upon seeing his missing hand, allows them to marry and agrees to help him slay the wolf to recover the jewel. The wolf, who was driven mad by the power of the jewel, was killed and the Silmaril recovered, but Beren died of his wounds, and Luthien herself died of grief. However, so great was their love that both were returned to life by the Valar, and Luthien was granted mortality, and they lived together again for a time.
It is a very long story, and there is much more to it besides what I have written here! There is also a link to Aragorn, in that the ring he wears in the Lord of the Rings films (and the books) is actually the Ring of Barahir (Beren's father), which is an heirloom of Aragorn's family, passed down through the ages from father to son.

Can i add to some points Herebrand???
First of all when Beren left Doriath, he went to Nargothrond, and the elf scouts gaurding the area let him be because of the ring of Barahir on his hand and thus he could come to it safely....
He set (in disguise) out with the elven the elven king of Nargothrond - Felagund of the House of Fingon - and 10-11 other companions. Sauron captured them at Tol Sirion (also called Tol-in-Gaurhoth or isle of werewolves in our tongue) and Luthien came to thier rescue with the help of Huan (the hound of Valinor and sent by Orome for Celegorm/Curufin - a son of Feanor) and bested Sauron at his own game of songs (since she is supposed to be the best singer ever) and destroyed the fortress and in the process also destroyed Draugluin (the original werewolf) and wounded Sauron(why and how - i leave to you. it's not the topic i want to illustrate). From the litter of Draugluin Morgoth created afterwards Carcharoth (by feeding with his own hand some dark meat, so that he grew fast - how fast exactly? The Silm. does not tell), only to gaurd the gates of Angband. And he was both huge and Terrorfull. (see - he did not send him afterwards as u said - but perhaps u know tht already...)
Luthien with her cloak of sleep (again, takes a lot of explanation) made him sleep when Luthien and co. wanted to enter Angband, but when they were onthier way back, Carcharoth was awake. Beren held up the Silmaril to scare him, but he bit it off (whhich afterwards made him mad). In his madness Carcharoth drove forth away from Angband.
Beren and Luthien returned empty handed to Doriath, and Beren when showed his empty, cut off hand to Eru Thingol, called himself Camlost, Empty handed in our tongue.
Carcharoth in his madness, pain (ohh yes did i mention the silmaril burned him a lot from inside??? No?? my mistake sorry) and many other things (all foul, ofcourse) came to doriath and he was found drinking the water at the base of the falls of Esgalduin. the waters there cooled him, but not for long. But during his stay there, Eru thingol had set out with Beleg Strongbow, Beren Erchamion and Mablung of the heavy hand and huan. in tht fight huan was killed (fulfilling his prophecy) and beren too was wounded mortally. (i largely leave out the specifics of the battle)
The belly of Carcharoth was cut and the silmaril was recovered with it bieng still clutched in the hand of beren.
Tht is probably half the "lay of lethian" and i hav still left out the start some of the midportion, a handfull of misadventures of beren and luthian and ofcourse many more specifics of the events so described. So thts it for now

My earlier post was a very abridged version of the Lay of Leithian - I made no secret of that! :-p Thanks for posting some more of it. It really is an amazing tale :-)
