I like how this relates to the concept in Tolkien's work about weapons having a personality of their own. There are several examples of named weapons throughout the mythology, all the way through the Silmarillion to Aragorn's sword Anduril in the trilogy. This could be an interesting role-play idea :-)

Don't know if this is along the lines of what you have in mind, Herebrand, but as an example, I think of Cúarlang's current main bow (technically a Reforged Hunter's Bow of the Second Age which he crafted himself), Naithros (Sindarin for "rain of thorns"), as being the bow which he fashioned out of lebethron early in his career with the Rangers of Ithilien and which brought with him on his exilic journey from Gondor.
That said, I'm curious to know what you have in mind in terms of incorporating legendary items into one's RP.
