Serving as a bard of Erebor, Hostalin sang many a song about the famous Thorin Oakenshield, hero of the Battle of Five Armies and savior or the Lonely Mountain. After writing so many songs about him, he began to idolize him. Eventually, he decided to go on a pilgrimage to Thorin's Hall, and pay respect to the shrine erected in his honor. Then he would travel the same exact path that Thorin and company did, 50 years before him. He planned on going to Hobbiton, and visiting Bag End, where Thorin had supper with Bilbo, then travelling east. To the camp with the stone trolls, to Rivendell, even to the Misty Mountains. Then through Mirkwood and eventually back to his home, Erebor. But he found the lands of Lindon, and all of Eriador for that matter, darkened by the shadows of Angmar. He found that these lands need more than a bard on a pilgrimage, they are in need of a hero, and his return journey must wait.

Now this is what epic stories are made of. More, more, I say!
